Napatak Executive Board Meeting Notes from Lambert Peat Harvest Project Meeting September 22, 2020

Executive Members, Kelly Anderson and J.P. Domhoff sat in on the meeting and these are Kelly's notes.

·         It will be an 80-year project not 100

·         Lambert will be harvesting peat moss that has been forming since the last ice age. Even after reclamation, the peat moss will never be the same as it only grows back at a rate of 1 mm per year. During the harvesting process, Lambert vacuums the top inch off which is 25 years of growth! Lambert will vacuum harvest these areas many times over the next for 33 years.

·         The project will be starting spring/summer 2021 for onsite prep harvesting and hauling begins spring 2022.

·         The harvest area is 557 hectares divided into several areas spread out over a much larger area.

·         The final reclamation is estimated to be in 2053. It could be reclaimed as a cranberry and/or blueberry fields, but not until 2053. This does mean the project and traffic will be on the Napatak road for 33 years.

·         Hauling will take place from May until October and will be hauled by semi and trailer

·         Kelly asked about weights, but said Lambert could not answer

·         Kelly asked how many loads per day will be on the roads. Lambert said they are projecting 20 loads being hauled per day and then said they expect 46 exit/entries a day which means in an 8-hour day, we can expect to see 5 or 6 semi-trucks per hour roughly or every 10 minutes semi-trucks will be on the Napatak road.

·         Kelly asked about the bad part of the road and bridge they replied that they think this was an area that would need upgrading but Kelly said he was not given any info as to what they were going to do.

·      Kelly added that all environment studies have been completed

·     Kelly also forwarded an email he received from Kristian Sullivan from WSP which is representing Lambert Peat Moss Company and the email included the following links:

·      Lambert La Ronge Area Peat Harvesting Project Information

·      Lambert La Ronge Area Peat Harvest Project FAQ

·      Lambert La Ronge Area Peat Harvest Project Online Engagement Meeting Recording

These photos were taken by Mariam Körner in the area designated by Lambert as Cluster 3 which is south of the Napatak Road.
